Cool Home Showdown: Pests

March 1, 2009 |  by cool dad  |  reality check  |  4 Comments

From Cool Mum’s slumber party with a roach (I think it was a beetle) and CoolStuffForDads.com’s comment, the next round of Cool Home Showdown is buggy in nature.

ROUND 2: PESTS

CM’s take: In the past 6 months, I’ve seen one centipede (after we left our window open) and one small roach. Thankfully, the only mice I’ve seen have been confined in a glass case at PetCo. Compare that to frequent earwigs and Asian roaches inside and black widows and swarms of mosquitoes just outside our walls in Florida. NYC wins this one easily.

CD’s take: Having waged wars with generations of black widows, I must concur with Cool Mum. Plus, the cockroaches and palmetto bugs that sneak into Florida homes are just nasty, filled with all sorts of goop when you smush them. I’ve seen several rats up here, but just in the streets and subway tunnels. If one ever invites itself into our tiny home here, I’ll revisit my opinion. The one thing against NYC: Cool Baby misses his favorite toys.

After two rounds of The Showdown, NYC takes a sizable lead!

NEW YORK CITY: 3

Cool Home SHOWDOWN: Round 1

February 15, 2009 |  by cool dad  |  reality check  |  4 Comments

If the webcam in our little laptop was accidentally left on for a week, there’s one topic that you would hear Cool Mum and I discussing almost every day. OK, now I’m paranoid and need to check the little laptop…

Good, our deepest secrets have not been broadcast across the Web. So, the one topic:

FLORIDA vs NEW YORK CITY

It may seem apples to oranges to compare one city with a whole state. However, NYC has plenty of population and diversity to hold up against any state in the Union.

CM and I have differing opinions in several areas of the FL v NYC debate. Also, this debate is not a broad “Which place is better?” discussion. It’s more asking “Which place is better for us?”

ROUND 1: WEATHER

Needs little explanation. New York seasons range from very cold to very hot with all sorts of precipitation. Florida seasons range from warm to very, very hot with rain and the occasional hurricane.

CM’s take
“Every day’s activities depend on the weather. The hour-by-hour forecast determines when I will be out of the apartment. In Florida, I never want to be outside because it’s humid and there is nothing new to see anyway. Here, the weather is frequently nice (not humid) and there are endless things to see.”
point: New York City

CD’s take
Beautiful days here are amazing. However, I don’t get to enjoy them often due to work. Snow is fun for a bit, but I get annoyed at having to bundle up and bundle the boy up (who did not enjoy the bundling process) every time we went somewhere. I’m not looking forward to the sweltering times in the subway tunnels. Baking in the Florida sun is not fun either, though I dislike having the weather dictate every day’s activities more. (whoa, I’m a downer)
point: Florida

After one round of The Showdown, the score is tied!

FLORIDA: 1
NEW YORK CITY: 1
