In Part 2 of my talk with Hilary Rushford of Dean Street Society, she talks about where parents can get style inspiration, how we can shop for clothes more effectively, and how dads can look cool. She also explains the useful services that Dean Street Society offers.

Thanks to Hilary for sharing her insight! If you want to keep up with her work, follow her on Twitter, too!

Cool Mum and I are on a quest to figure out how to dress cool. And when I say ‘quest’, I mean that we try to squeeze in a trip to H&M every other weekend. It’s not easy to raise two kids and find the time to think about how we dress. But we’ve found that our wardrobes have a real effect on our confidence, our time, and the organization of our home. We’re sure that we’re not the only parents who feel this way, so I sought professional help for us all.

Hilary Rushford is the founder of Dean Street Society, a personal styling and branding firm in Brooklyn. She frequently works with parents and parents-to-be, so I thought it would be cool to ask Hilary about how fashion can fit into the busy lives of parents. We had a great talk, which I’ve split into two parts for our treasured readers’ convenience.

In Part 1, Hilary shares about how she became a personal stylist, why parents should care about how they dress, and whether parents should pay attention to the fashion industry. She also gives us cool advice on figuring out which clothes to keep and whether parents’ individual styles should complement each other.

Next time, we’ll hear what Hilary has to say about getting style inspiration and how to shop better. In the meantime, check out what she’s up to at Dean Street Society!

I finally found the perfect dress! And it was only $25 at Target!

This month, on three separate occasions, I spent hours scouring the stores in Soho. H&M, Uniqlo, Banana Republic, random boutiques and all. I even tried on dresses that were out of my price range, just in case. Meanwhile, my perfect dress was waiting on a front rack on the way to the diapers.

The original criteria are met in this dress:

  1. Suitable for year-round use (with leggings and sweater)
  2. Nursing-friendly (front zipper)
  3. Durable for wearing over and over (polyester)
  4. Creative and fun (ruffles, red/white/grey birds flying around)
  5. Good at hiding post-baby fluffage (ruffles again)

On top of this, it was cheap and it dries quickly for Wonderwashing at home! Thank you, Target!!!
