Men’s Health used a smattering of stats like suicide rates and unemployment rates to estimate the saddest cities in America.

Unfortunately, our home state of Florida claims three spots among the 10 saddest cities, with St. Petersburg frowning the most at #100. Maybe a lot of people get weirded out and saddened by the Salvador Dali Museum, which we happen to like. We’re also big fans of Mel’s Hot Dogs in Tampa, which is sulking at #97.

NYC, which most people peg as a volatile mix of angry, sad, and rude, is actually feeling OK at #39. Makes sense to me. I’m fine with a community that has a pizzeria within walking distance of virtually every home.

Where does your city fall on the list? Do you agree with it?

We’re always up for getting to know the Cool Readers better. As you probably figured, the name Are We Still Cool? refers to us wondering if we are still cool after having a baby. After telling folks that we were pregnant, it seemed like we kept hearing things like

Oh, do all the [insert fun activity that non-parents do] while you can!

Oh, so you guys are settling down?

Oh, your life is completely and utterly over. (maybe I misheard this one)

We were determined to not let our lives be completely and utterly over just yet. That happens when your kid starts dating, right? Even Johnson and Johnson’s well-meaning slogan,

Having a baby changes everything

can be taken the wrong way, as in,

We love our life as a young, energetic married couple that can stay out all night, sleep in all day with two incomes and complete freedom to do anything and go anywhere and wait a minute, we’re having a lot of fun, what are we doing, oh and the baby’s here and just peed in my eye.

In spite of the mounting case against us, we wanted to stay cool as new parents, so we started a blog about it.

In the vein of the usual hard-hitting, existential questions that we ask, here comes another doozy: Which chocolatey breakfast cereal do you like best?

Cocoa Krispies

Cocoa Pebbles

Cocoa Puffs

Obviously, this ultra-deep question boils down to the differences between Krispies, Pebbles, and Puffs. The definitions of the cereal types were derived from seconds, nay even minutes devoted to making some stuff up in my head.

Krispies are the result of blasting rice grains with hot air, thus aerating them into the holey, “krisp” form. The hot air consists of 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and 2% cocoa powder, giving the krispies their chocogoodness.

Pebbles come from an ancient Mayan quarry found in South America. This quarry is the only known source of cacao rocks. The rocks are pulverized by a large club wielded by a powerful baby named Bam-Bam, thus creating the beloved pebbles.

Puffs are produced by cuckoo birds that are fed only Hershey’s chocolate bars. The puffs are aged one year in hidden areas of shelves and pantries before being boxed for consumption, thus creating their crunchy texture, which seems contrary to their light, fluffy name.

Cool Mum prefers Cocoa Puffs. She likes their crunch, which stays crunchy in milk. I dislike soggy cereal as well, but I actually like Cocoa Pebbles the best. There’s something about their flavor – they seem to have a unique flavor as opposed to the Puffs or Krispies. It may be a South American thing, or the plastic bags in which they’re stored might just be made out of flavorful toxic chemicals.

Which do you like best: Cocoa Krispies, Pebbles, or Puffs?

Cool Mum and I may differ on this, but if I had to describe AWSC? in one word, it would be: potential.

I feel like we’ve done a lot of fun stuff in the past 2 years, but haven’t yet hit a great stride. As we’re still figuring out our living and work situation here, I’m waiting for good conditions under which we can run this blog. That means that we can record video whenever we want or have solitude in which to write. You’ll see what I mean soon.

How would I want to describe this blog in one word? Unique.

Like my love for cookies, the blogosphere is continually expanding. I’d like to carve out territory and personality that’s all our own.

So, how aboutsa you?

How would you describe your blog in one word? And what one word describes what you want your blog to be?

1. Our house was shown to a potential buyer recently. Our realtor reported that she seemed to like the house but needed to show her husband. I had to inform Cool Dad that this is one of the all-time classic lines we ladies use when we’re trying to conceal our lack of interest and feel bad for wasting someone’s time. This woman is NOT interested in our house. Cool Dad still holds out hope.

Ladies–have you ever used this line or a variation of it: “Okay, well I need to talk to my husband first”…or “Sure, just let me just get my husband to come take a look later this week” just to get out of a situation gracefully? Maybe it’s just me.

2. Now that I’m pushing a stroller, I feel a little weird going through the juniors section at Marshall’s or walking into Forever 21. But the alternative–the official women’s department–is just too much for me to handle. I usually take the easy way out and go to the Gap or Old Navy (those folks are smart) since my style can be defined as “trying way too hard to be inconspicuous/which clothes can I wear for the next 10 years.”

I always wonder, though…

Ladies (and men?)–When is it time for a lady to stop shopping in the juniors department/juniors-type stores? Is it when she gets married? When she has her first child? When she becomes a grandparent?

Opinions, please!

So, I said that I would ask this from time to time: What are you stoked about? As in, what are you are really looking forward to?

I’m stoked about the possibility of new beginnings in possibly even far-from-here places! Such a tease of a statement, I know. I guess my future is teasing me. I look forward to hearing what’s tantalizing you all!
