About
Are We Still Cool? is a humorous parenting and lifestyle blog run by Eric and Laura Corpus, who post under the pseudonyms Cool Dad and Cool Mum. The blog was founded in 2007, and the name refers to the authors questioning whether they were still cool after having a child. This is a major topic of the blog, in addition to parenting and its impact on one’s life. In 2008, the bloggers, with their 1.5-year-old son, haphazardly moved from Florida to New York City with no job to seek new opportunities. Their ongoing journey, which includes the birth of their second child, is documented on the blog as well.
So, that’s the cut-and-dry summary of the blog. You can go back to perusing the blog, or if you want more detail and tons of corny jokes, read on.
Questions probably imagined by some AWSC? visitor at some point in history:
Where am I?
You’ve stumbled onto the blog Are We Still Cool? Your hosts are Cool Mum and Cool Dad, and this is our tongue-in-cheek discussion of whether we are still cool, given that we are parents, and the different ways that having offspring has touched our lives. We also hoped to become the #1 source for caviar recipes on the Web, but we came to realize: that stuff is expensive.
A blog about parenting? Intriguing! Do you talk about anything else?
Well, we also talk about how we moved from Florida to New York with three bags and our 1.5-year-old son. We arrived in NYC with no jobs or friends. All of that so we could change our Current City on Facebook to New York, NY. Oh, and Cool Dad was 31 and wanted to finally establish a career, something that he thought that he should do after forgoing a profitable future in engineering to play rock music for middle schoolers. That’s kind of a long story, too.
And how’s that working for you?
Well, right now we live in a three-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in NYC.
Wow!
Yeah, and as a single-income family, we share the place with two roommates. And our family of four lives in one 8′x8′ bedroom that has no closet. And Cool Dad keeps his unmentionables in a dresser in the living room. And…
OK, please stop. What’s with the nicknames? Who are you, really?
When we started the blog, we wanted to stay anonymous because we were talking about our family and stuff. And we thought, “Internet, you scary.” We chose the ridiculous nicknames Cool Mum and Dad that matched our often-ridiculous posts. We never showed our faces or revealed too much about us.
A year later, we realized that no one cared who we were anyway, so we revealed our identities. Oddly enough, our “coming out” coincided with us appearing in a photoshoot for New York Magazine and we really wanted to show it on the blog.
In real life, we are just a couple of internet geeks named Eric and Laura Corpus. Our kids, Cool Baby and Cool Newbie, are actually Noah and Micah.
Gimme some details. What can I expect to find while I’m here?
Given a choice between posting something funny or something about prehistoric Siberian nomadic cultures, we will (almost) always choose to post something funny. Specific topics we like to post about include:
- Comparing ourselves to what is actually cool (and often being disappointed)
- Things that people never told us about raising kids
- Our ongoing search for a future in New York City
- Living frugally
- Silly videos and (badly doctored) photos that make us look quite uncool
- The occasional sentimental post about our sons and about playing catch in our cornfield. Or maybe that was from a Kevin Costner movie.
Interesting, but I don’t have time to browse 2 years of posts. Can you point me to your coolest stuff?
Yes! Soon. Let us do the browsing for you and post links here shortly.
