Weekend Photos: Helping Out in Far Rockaway

This weekend, I went with my friend’s church to help in Far Rockaway, a beachside neighborhood in Queens that was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Many homes were flooded. As you’ll see, the floodwaters knocked out some of the beach’s boardwalk and brought sand – lots of it. Most of the residents were still without power nearly two weeks later among the winter temperatures. The church brought needed supplies, like jackets, sweater, diapers, water and batteries, as well as grills to cook burgers and hot dogs.

Apparently, newlyweds Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel (Justica? Jesstin? Timberbiel?) served in the neighborhood, too. We must have crossed wires because we didn’t hang out afterward.

I ended up serving as a photographer/videographer, and here are some of the photos from the day. (I didn’t have a chance to touch ’em up in Lightroom, so please accept ’em as they are.)

Some residents invited into their basement to document the damage. This was the waterline on the door.

Many volunteers came out to help people shovel sand.
