Over the last couple of days, a sore throat had me down for the count. I could barely talk, my body ached, and every time I swallowed, it felt like someone was twisting a knife in my throat. I buckled from the pain. If it weren’t for a love of stuffing my face, and I probably wouldn’t have eaten.
And there was no escaping it at night. The constant pain of swallowing wouldn’t let me sleep. I put a towel on my pillow, hoping that I could drool all night long instead of swallowing. My autonomic nervous system didn’t allow it, probably ’cause it doesn’t want me to drown in my own spit as I sleep.
I tried various sore throat remedies, including sucking on lozenges, drinking hot tea, gargling warm salt water, and eating a Chunky bar to coat my throat with smooth milk chocolate. I even gargled a cayenne pepper mix that was supposed to ease the pain. Nothing worked.
However, after my second night of no sleep, I gave the cayenne pepper solution another shot, but instead of gargling, I drank it. As I sipped it, the blazing soreness in my throat dwindled to a mere scratch. Here’s my recipe:
CAYENNE PEPPER SORE THROAT REMEDY
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp honey
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice
The ingredients are approximate. You might need less cayenne if you’re sensitive to spice. I just stirred in what I thought I could handle and sipped away.
For scientific accuracy, I’ll say that I also took one ibuprofen an hour before drinking the cayenne mix. Maybe that had something to do with it, but the pain subsided as soon as I started drinking my sore throat remedy.
I hope that no one ever suffers from that kind of throat pain again, but if you do, I hope this spicy little concoction will help.
