We always come back to this, if for nothing else to make the name of our blog make sense. Let’s look at the weekend and see how our coolness is hanging in there.
FRIDAY
Watched our Netflix Movie of the Week, Up. Seeing a movie within 5 years of its release is worth something for us [+2 cool points]. Being fairly new to Netflix, we’re still catching up on popular culture. Cool Mum liked Julie and Julia, so for our next movie, I ordered what I hope will be a light-hearted family comedy in the same vein, focusing on the art of American baking, American Pie. Do you think we’ll like it?
SATURDAY
One of our good friends, who is due a week after CM, had a baby shower. Our other friends, who have a car here, kindly picked up CM and her prego self, saving her a substantial trip on the subway [+1 cool point for us, +10 cp for our friends]. It was like when I picked up CM to go to my junior prom. Actually, if that had really happened, I would’ve been taking a middle schooler to a high school dance. I wouldn’t want to make that mistake again.
While CM was teaching her friend how to give her new baby a shower, Cool Baby and I hit Central Park. Fortunately, God gave me the foresight to pack extra undies and pants, because CB peed his pants while we were playing on the Great Lawn. The closest bathroom was quite far away, so I did the fastest quick change I could do, shielding CB from the lenses of tourists’ DSLRs. I also took the liberty of using Central Park as our personal clothesline. [-3 cool points]
However, I felt quite cool when we ran into several friends also enjoying the mild, sunny Saturday at CP. [+5 cool points] First, it was a friend who was lounging right next to where CB was watering the Great Lawn grass. Later, a cool engaged couple from church wandered into our area later after checking out a potential apartment. Then we met up with a friend and wolfed down burgers and fries at the Shake Shack. After that, a third dude joined us and we felt Three Men and a Baby strolling through the Upper West Side. (Cool fact from IMDB: Leonard Nimoy directed Three Men and a Baby? Three Men and a Tribble would’ve been much more up my alley. [-3 cool points])
SUNDAY
Will we never learn? After the marriage-straining first trip and another God-testing escapade, we ventured out for another jaunt to the IKEA in Brooklyn. We rented a Zipcar again and gave ourselves four hours. Surely that would be enough time to make it down there on a low-traffic Sunday morning, eat, buy a dozen items, and return. Well, a tip to any New Yorkers planning an IKEA trip soon – block out a whole day. Or several, to allow your post-traumatic stress disorder to subside.
After making it to Brooklyn in record time, we got lost. When we finally got there, we ate quickly and hustled through the store collecting our goods. I turned into an anxious madman, agreeing to buy stuff without even considering the price, just whatever would get us out of there and return the Zipcar on time.
The checkout was pure comedy. My line moved the slowest out of all IKEAs worldwide yesterday. When we checked out, I was in such a hurry that I left everything that we paid for in the checkout lane. The security guy said, “Um… you appear to be missing some items here.” Then CM went back to buy something else and used her prego belly to physically and emotionally cut in front of everyone in a long checkout line. Go, Cool Fetus!
We raced back to the Upper East Side, thankfully not getting lost or stuck in traffic, and I returned the car with literally five minutes to go. I think my blood pressure rose while reliving yesterday. At least we got cheap Swedish furniture and CM had a good Mum’s Day. [+5 cool points]

I can sympathize with your love/hate for IKEA. When we moved we were so happy that Prague has not one… but two IKEAs! Then we had to use them. Between the 45 minute one-way trip by public, the need to outfit our entire home, the foreign language, and the need to have it all shipped to our home; I think we may have depleted our entire IKEA love tank in the first month here.
I haven’t been back since.
Congrats on a net gain in cool points!
Also uncool – they have Americanized their almond cake, meaning that instead of keeping the cake simple and light, they’ve coated it with a chocolate icing. Yummy, yes, but way too sweet.
