I only do it because we have a “no nuts products” rule in our school. Not even bread that’s been packaged in the same place as tree nuts is allowed. And since that one brand costs $4 a loaf – I make it…for only .60 a loaf.

We use only homemade bread at our house. The crust is amazing!

But for the kids, I use a cookie cutter. No crust & a fun shape makes them gobble it up.

good point on minimizing waste! CB is only 2, so he has plenty of time to start demanding crust removal.

I always turn the “heel” (I agree with CM, it needs a new name) crusts in, as somebody else mentioned above. They don’t mind eating it, if they don’t see it!

I must, however, confess that when using inside slices, I DO cut off the crust for my son (age 3). I cut it off as thinly as humanly possible, though, because I just hate to waste food. If I don’t cut it off, my son ends up eating only about 1/2 to 2/3 of the sandwich, thus wasting even MORE food than if I had cut the crusts off for him. At least, that’s how I justify it…

the only resemblance i see is the first-thing-in-the-morning wild hair. although i probably did make that same face one time when, on a trip to italy, CD brought me completely raw prosciutto to eat at 7am.

mary–that sounds tough (although the way you just described the situation cracked me up. no pun intended). crying for crackers in the middle of the night?! and CD, i don’t think even jessica seinfeld has found a way to hide vegetables inside of crackers…
