Do you trim the crust off of sandwiches?

15 June 2009 465 views 22 Comments by cool mum

Some parents kindly trim the crust off of their kids’ sandwiches.

Other parents eat the interior slices of bread themselves, and give their kids the heels of the loaf so that the whole sandwich is a crust.

That’s just the kind of people we are. And somehow he still eats the whole thing (after making a few faces).

you can tell by my prompt response,,, trimming the crust is a big fat NO! I cant say I’m not guilty of throwing away some tasty crust, but no trimming!

    mmmm,,, crust!!! ^_^

Hey, it’s all just bread, right?
I read about some parent who flipped the heels inside out, so they LOOKED normal, and the kids were none the wiser (that was with a grilled cheese, though; not sure how it’d work with a pb&j).

My mom would always take the crust off for me. I still don’t eat crust, but I don’t cut it off, I just don’t eat it.
The end slices were always my dad’s favorite so I never had to worry about that, now I just throw them away or feed to the birds.

  • These days, I consider a meal a success if she eats ANYTHING other than crackers. And for the record, “crackers” can be anything from rice cakes to actual crackers to bread to chips. Basically, anything carby and without any staying power. You know, so she wakes up in the middle of the night, crying and hungry, asking for…you guessed it…”Cracker!”

If only you could stick something in between those crackers. Maybe big pieces of steamed broccoli?

mary–that sounds tough (although the way you just described the situation cracked me up. no pun intended). crying for crackers in the middle of the night?! and CD, i don’t think even jessica seinfeld has found a way to hide vegetables inside of crackers…

And this is part of the reason why you guys are Cool Parents. Seriously… I love that you’re not cutting the crusts off Noah’s sandwiches. It’s much more practical this way… is that right? more practical? hmm… it just sounds wrong to me. Either way – I’m all for the sandwiches with crusts! Why create more work for yourself?

And that face he’s making… sorry Laura, but it amuses me how much he resembles you here. And that’s not to say that I think you’re whiny… :)

I always turn the “heel” (I agree with CM, it needs a new name) crusts in, as somebody else mentioned above. They don’t mind eating it, if they don’t see it!

I must, however, confess that when using inside slices, I DO cut off the crust for my son (age 3). I cut it off as thinly as humanly possible, though, because I just hate to waste food. If I don’t cut it off, my son ends up eating only about 1/2 to 2/3 of the sandwich, thus wasting even MORE food than if I had cut the crusts off for him. At least, that’s how I justify it…

We use only homemade bread at our house. The crust is amazing!

But for the kids, I use a cookie cutter. No crust & a fun shape makes them gobble it up.
