Cheapo uncool household tricks: Trash can-free living

Here is a tradition we have carried over from our first NYC apartment .  As minimalists, we didn’t want to purchase a trash can, nor did we have any space for one.  We also suspected that Cool Baby would one day dig for buried treasure in it.

I took a hint from childhood camping trips and decided to hang the trash in a grocery bag from the door hinge.  The bag on the right holds our stash of clean grocery bags, while the bag on the left holds the actual trash.  Classy.

  1. Great tip. Not sure it would work for us. But an excellent notion.

Ha- classy is right! This is what we end up doing when we visit my mom’s house, as her garbage can is under the sink with all the poisonous cleaning supplies, so we have to put on the safety latch. I’m too lazy to undo that every time I want to throw something away, so we just set up a bag. WFMToo!

That made me laugh! Only because I’ve done that before back in the day. I suppose that’s better than hanging it on the door knob.

    You’re cool!

We have an indoor trashcan, but we don’t have an outdoor one. It motivates us to minimize both the volume and the offensiveness of our garbage. Click on my name for more details.

How do you keep it from falling? And the area around your door must reek!! Or doesn’t it?

Please consider stopping by my site. I’d love to hear your thoughts on my posts. :)

Wow, I think you should ADD cool points for being people who generate so little trash!
I have a long way to go before I can convert to the “bag on a hinge” system, but at least there’ll be no more plastic laundry detergent and kitchen/bathroom cleaner bottles with my name on them in landfills! See the latest post on my blog for details: http://bellabluegrass.blogspot.com/2009/07/cleaning-green.html

Good to know that I am not alone in hanging the trash.
