Natalie Portman and the Cool Vegetarian Challenge

I’ve wrestled with this decision for several days now, but after deep thought and consideration, I’ve decided to make the commitment:

I’m going vegetarian.

No more thick juicy burgers, crispy fried chicken, or beef hot dogs with sauerkraut and onions. Those thin-skinned, tasty, economical hot dogs with sweet onion sauce…

*snaps out of it*

Oh, I should probably mention that I’m going veggie for just a week. Small detail, of course.

Some have been inspired to become vegetarians after reading about detrimental effects that meat may have on their health. Others because of their beliefs in animal rights. And a few are forced to because their bodies cannot process meat.

My inspiration for becoming a 7-day vegetarian? A picture of Natalie Portman.

First of all, this is nothing inappropriate. I simply saw a picture of her, and the first thought that came in my head was that I remember reading that she’s a vegetarian. Then, out of nowhere, I wondered if I could be a vegetarian, too. Then as with most notable things that happen in my life, I thought about how I can blog about it, and here we are.

I’m trying vegetarianism for a week. Mainly, I’m not eating the flesh of animals (sounds tasty, huh?), but I’m allowing animal products. So, dairy is fair game. If I didn’t have cheese pizza to depend on, this would be a much different story.

I started the Cool Vegetarian Challenge today with a PB&B sandwich, cheese pizza, and 2 of the 30 Veggie Burgers that CM bought at the store today. I’m gonna be seeing a lot of those Veggie Burgers for the next six days.

As this sounds ridiculous and pointless, I’m sure that you’re not surprised at all to read these words here. I guess I want to do it because I’ve never done it before, and I don’t think I can do it, which of course makes me want to try all the more.

Is your curiosity piqued at all? Are you wondering if you can do it? If so, I’d love to have some partners for the Cool Vegetarian Challenge! (by the way, CM had chicken today, so I guess she’ll start tomorrow)

i’m a veggie and have been for 18 years! so you CAN do it!
best veggie burgers in my humble yet correct opinion are the boca FLAME GRILLED ones. put on a yummy bun with some cheese and you are good to go! my entire family loves those things, so i think it wont be as bad as you think.
can’t wait to hear how it goes.
another meal idea: st. yves has veggie ground round (found in the produce area of groceries) that is YUMMY in chili and VERY easy to make. grab a pack of that ($3.99), a chili packet, 3 cans of beans, and some canned tomatoes and you have an amazing meal ready in 5 minutes. makes maybe 6 bowls?
anyway, can’t wait to hear how it goes! you just might be changed forever :)

Hunh. Well, good luck to you! I hope your experiment goes very well.

Me, on the other hand? Not so much into veggies only. My father-in-law is a cattle farmer, so beef is a big deal at our house. Actually, we’re getting our side of beef this weekend. Mmmm…tasty, tasty beef.

Oh, sorry, shouldn’t cause a brother to stumble and all that.

:) Seriously, good idea and good luck!

Randel (i assume) – I saw the Flame-Grilled veggie burgers in the store, but they weren’t the Boca ones. I was hesitant b/c I thought they might look a lot better than they taste. Sounds pretty good though!

    Mary – beef… i remember beef…

Raq – it’s going ok so far. Day 3 to come.

Richies – 53 years? OK, I’m much more certain I can make it a week. :)
