IKEA: Threatening marriages all around the world

November 4, 2008 |  by cool mum  |  cheap is cool

We are now happily settling into our very own place in NYC–a 2-room studio which we adore! It’s an efficient use of space, cost-effective, and overall just cool (to us).

Naturally, we headed to IKEA in Brooklyn to find some cost-effective and cool furnishings for our new home. We both agreed on the place. The date and time caused an argument, but we ended up going on Saturday.

In my mind: Saturday = our last chance ever to get things to sleep and eat on…We own no furniture up here. CD works all week and our furnished sublet ends Thursday.

In his mind: Saturday = biggest football game of the year, an afternoon with guys, from 3pm on.

You can see where this is going. I made a bunch of big mistakes that day. Here are the highlights:

-thinking it would only take 2 hours to decide on and buy everything.
-thinking that Cool Baby would be happy during this process.
-thinking that CD would make it to the sports bar in time.
-forgetting about the warehouse part, where CD would have to lift and load heavy boxes.
-losing the “master list” I had spent 3 in-store hours making of all of the items needed and the exact locations within the gigantic warehouse.
-walking every aisle to gather items by memory.
-almost agreeing to get a ride home from a random stranger lurking around with a minivan.
-not knowing how to get a minivan taxi to take us and boxes from Brooklyn to Manhattan, or how much it would cost.

The good news is that we saved a heck of a lot of money choosing the IKEA route—manual labor, headaches, and all.

Thank you, CD, for being so forgiving and gracious! And for making 10-block walking trips back and forth to move our pre-IKEA stuff into the new apartment! (He’s doing this after full days at work! Give him a high five if you see him around the blogosphere…he could use it.)

Wow – Cool Dad, you deserve a BIG high five. Maybe even a fist bump. If that sort of thing is even cool anymore.

And Cool Mom – even though you lost your list, you were so organized to come up with it in the first place!

I have a friend who refers to their sectional couch as the “divorce couch,” because for some reason (it’s been a long time since I heard the story), the delivery or set up or something of this couch caused such a huge fight. What IS IT about furniture, huh?

  2. Hi 5!!

I feel like some cool points should be deducted/rewarded here. Do commenters still get to help in that? If so…

-5 cool points for forgetting about NCAA football! (for shame)
+7 points for your marriage surviving it (and shopping at IKEA!)

  3. Wow…both of you. Wow. This is why I haven’t been to IKEA yet.

  4. Thank you, CM.

  5. i love all things IKEA. but dang that place is overwhelming. i seriously will take a bunch of motrin and practice deep breathing exercises before i walk into one of those places.

    congrats tho!

    high 5, CD!

  6. A high five to cool dad from me! Glad you guys found some fun, new furniture and a great place to live. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on life in NYC.

  7. IKEA = my mecca.

I made a 4 hour drive there (and then back) in one day just to get some things on my own “master list.” I love that place. :)

Glad to hear things are settling in for you guys up there! You should watch “You’ve Got Mail” to put you in even more of a “fall in NYC” mood. :)

  8. I’m impressed. What a feat! Great work both of you!
