Cool Mum and her cool picnic

November 12, 2008 |  by cool dad  |  cheap is cool

OK, I’m stealing this from Cool Mum, as she relayed this idea to me over dinner in the Target Snack Shop.

Today, CM and the boy went for the usual walk around the Upper East Side. However, instead of doing lunch together at home, she changed things up. She brought three slices of bread from home and went to a niiice grocery store – like much pricier than we would normally shop.

She proceeded to the deli and got:

- some slices of superdeluxe turkey breast. Not just Boars Head cold cuts, but an actual roasted turkey breast that they sliced from.
- A couple of slices of good cheese
- Fresh fruit salad from the deli

Total cost for these gourmet picnic lunch for Cool Mum and the boy: about $3.00!

I am so proud of CM being frugal and getting great food at the same time. Praise God for marrying up!

  1. What a great idea! A quarter pound of any meat or cheese is plenty for 2 sandwiches and won’t break the bank.
I live in Suffolk County and haven’t been to NYC in years. If I actually make it there this Christmas season, I’ll have to keep your idea in mind. Restaurants are too pricey, and you can’t exactly walk around all day carrying leftovers.
