1. Our house was shown to a potential buyer recently. Our realtor reported that she seemed to like the house but needed to show her husband. I had to inform Cool Dad that this is one of the all-time classic lines we ladies use when we’re trying to conceal our lack of interest and feel bad for wasting someone’s time. This woman is NOT interested in our house. Cool Dad still holds out hope.
Ladies–have you ever used this line or a variation of it: “Okay, well I need to talk to my husband first”…or “Sure, just let me just get my husband to come take a look later this week” just to get out of a situation gracefully? Maybe it’s just me.
2. Now that I’m pushing a stroller, I feel a little weird going through the juniors section at Marshall’s or walking into Forever 21. But the alternative–the official women’s department–is just too much for me to handle. I usually take the easy way out and go to the Gap or Old Navy (those folks are smart) since my style can be defined as “trying way too hard to be inconspicuous/which clothes can I wear for the next 10 years.”
I always wonder, though…
Ladies (and men?)–When is it time for a lady to stop shopping in the juniors department/juniors-type stores? Is it when she gets married? When she has her first child? When she becomes a grandparent?
Opinions, please!

I have used the same line in reverse. I need to talk to my wife. I have had salesmen be extremely rude and question my masculinity when I said I need to talk to my wife.
An Arkie’s Musings
I have definitely used the line, “I need to talk to my husband about this first”. Works perfectly. And…. if a wife or husband is going to make a huge decision like purchasing a house, I would hope they would consult the other spouse first!
The clothes thing is a good question. I’m much older than you already so I’ve stopped shopping in juniors a long time ago. But… I am not about to shop in the older women’s dept. yet. The Gap and Old Navy are always a good choice for me. If I happen to go into a store that seems much too young for me, I pretend that I’m shopping for my daughter and we wear the same size!
There really does need to be more stores that have a middle ground of style choices, not too young, but not too old.
I stopped shopping the juniors department when I was in my mid/late twenties. For a few more years, I shopped Gap and Old Navy. Now (early into late 30s), I shop Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft. Banana Republis is too skinny for me. Nordstrom is too expensive.
It’s me again… I agree with Courtney about Ann Taylor Loft. And yes, Nordstrom has great clothes but is too expensive for me also. The Limited is another good one and I like I.N.C. brand at Macy’s.
I’ve definitely used the “ask my husband” line. But I really hope you have a buyer for your house anyway!!
As for the juniors department, most department stores have an in-between misses department, right? Sadly, I haven’t been able to shop the sizes in either of those departments for a while. But I know that when I watch “What Not to Wear,” they are very anti-junior dept for adults…
richies–those are the type of salesmen you don’t want to buy from anyway!
oh yeah–ann taylor loft is the perfect solution! they have some great sales too. good call, ladies!
I definitely pull the “I’ll check with Sarah” line all the time.
well. i borrow lots of my daughters shirts. but…she is a self respecting young one – so it works.
i buy lots of jr. clothing (im 38, as of this last friday) but i dont buy the trashy stuff. theres lots of cute stuff if you look hard enough. i shop at Ross, mostly.
my MIL used to ask me when i was going to start dressing like a mature woman, meaning…old like her with permanent pleated polyester sears slacks. um….let me check with my husband on that =o
I definately use the “I have to talk to my husband”…line, it’s easy, and anyone questioning that would just be down right disrespectful.
As far as clothes go, I tend to stick with GAP, Old Navy, and I also like American Eagle.. I get the Odd dress or dressier shirt in Forever 21 (cause it’s cheap). I think it’s more about “style” or fit than it is Jr. dept or not? And also about how it’s worn and with what. BTW, I have almost 4 kiddos now and I usually shop by myself, mainly for my own sanity.
