Since we moved most everything to the Grand ‘Rents’ house last weekend, we’ve been living in a near-empty house, trying to finish up to leave town. We actually have our CD player and stereo left, so it’s been nice to blast music to keep us motivated and keep the boy dancing.
However, we only have 3 CDs left:
1) Bebel Gilberto’s Tanto Tempo
2) A worship CD from the early ’90s.
3) Coldplay’s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends
Well, Bebel is reserved for soothing the boy to sleep with her smooth bossa nova. The worship CD has a great spirit behind it, but it doesn’t pump you up for getting stuff done.
So, we’ve been listening to Coldplay on repeat for about 10 days. Amazingly, I enjoy it every time, which I guess is a testament to how good of an album it is. Years from now, I’ll probably associate Viva la Vida with getting ready for our NYC adventure.
That happens regularly to each of us: associating songs with times in our lives. Sometimes, it can be like deja vu — hearing a song will not only remind me of those times, but bring back the feelings and self-concept I had back then. Weird, but pretty cool, too.
Here are some songs that help me relive the past:
1) Neil Diamond – America: playing in the living room as a kid
2) Don Henley – The Boys of Summer: growing up, feeling afraid when he says “Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac”
3) Pearl Jam – Alive: rocking in my minivan as a high school senior
4) Delirious? – Deeper: I wasn’t a huge fan of this song, but it was the first track on the WoW tape that someone gave me when I was a new Christian
5) Good Charlotte – I Just Wanna Live: definitely not a fan, but it played everywhere during our first trip to Europe
What songs bring back memories of old for you?

Cd, I just blogged about this very thing! Here’s a few for you – hearing the Spice Girls (thankfully, this does not happen often) makes me think of my senior trip right before graduation. “Mr. Wendel” by Arrested Development makes me think of my 8th grade school trip to DC. And “I Should’ve Been a Cowboy” takes me back to church camp in Texas.
Sister Hazel put out a live cd called “Live Live” and we listened to it packing and moving into our new house. It’s such an awesome CD, clean words, good messages. You should check it out!
really, there are too many. “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx introduced me to the idea that yes, there is such a thing as “overplayed.” Neil Diamond’s “Heartlight” is forever linked to my brother and an ET costume made by my grandma. “Jesus Freak,” by dcTalk, and “Love Song” by Jars of Clay evoke memories of my freshman dorm room. i’ll stop there.
p.s. Emily – Sister Hazel’s new one – Before the Amplifiers – is even better than Live Live!
Seeing as I’m still sort of a kid, I don’t know many songs of old. Haha. But as a kid who grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s, pop was big. Any N*Sync or Backstreet Boys song brings back so many memories, it’s crazy. Spice Girls and Briney Spears definitely remind me of elementary school too.
As for Christian music, pretty much all of it from that time brings back memories from riding in the car with my mom or whatever. Including that Delirious? song you put up. I heard it on the radio a couple weeks ago, actually.
any Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Live, Alice in Chains takes me back to the ol’ high school days of yore. Lots of rocking going on.
needtobreathe’s CD with the lion on the cover takes me back to my honeymoon in NYC (wife bought it the first day there and we listened to it in the mornings and evenings before leaving and after coming back from touring the city. That wasn’t tool long ago though.
The Supertones, MxPx, and No Doubt take me back to long road trips for swim meets in HS and all the stupid tricks and pranks we’d play on each other and try not getting caught.
