So Cow Appreciation Day came and went last Friday, July 11. Unfortunately, as the day went on, the important responsibilities we have as parents got in the YEAH RIGHT. There’s no way we’re missing free Chick Fil-A even if it means acting like bovine fools in public.
The popular costume is a white shirt and shorts with “spots” of black construction paper taped on. Neither of us have all-white outfits, so we had to improvise.
We have black shirts and pants, but for some reason, I didn’t want to just tape “spots” of white printer paper on a black outfit. It didn’t seem true to the Holstein style — like they’re mostly white with black spots, not the other way around. However, Wikipedia says only that they are “large, stylish animals with color patterns of black and white”, so it would’ve been fine.
Instead, we cut holes into white garbage bags and wore them over our black outfits. Thus, the white-with-black-spots look was preserved. That is, until I decided to just tape white spots on my pants to make sure I was head-to-toe cow.
Enough talk, here’s the picture. The boy looks completely embarrassed to be seen with his Uncool Mum and Dad.
Observant readers will notice something green on my left foot. Yes, to complete the look, I tucked some grass into the cuff of my pants. Hey, I’m serious about my cow appreciation.
Our creative (lame) effort was a success! The CFA staff rang a cowbell for us, and we ordered our 2 combos for the low, low price of FREE.
We had planned to order the most expensive combo on the menu (chicken salad sandwich, I think), but when it came down to it, we had to go with the basics: Deluxe Chicken Sandwich, medium waffle fries, ice-cold Coca-Cola product.
And we sat in CFA for at least an hour, enjoying our free food, talk of the future, and curious stares from customers who’d never heard of Cow Appreciation Day. It was totally worth being bovine for the evening (along with sweating inside those garbage bags).
Thanks to Chick Fil-A for the free food, memorable pictures, and inspiration for yet another CFA blog post!

Cow Appreciation Day is big in our town! Great costumes!
That was a great idea to use the white garbage bags! I tried to talk my son and his girlfriend into doing it but he was absolutely not interested. Waaay too cool I guess. Congrats on being brave and scoring the free food! Oh and by the way, cool boy is super cute!
Hey, that was quite brilliant. I’m sure there will be a lot of plastic cows running around next year
What’s with not dressing up cool baby? Does he not eat CFA? You could have dressed him up, claimed his free combo and saved it for later!
I think I keep saying this: but if our Chick-fil-A was closer than a 30 minute drive, we’d have to have a separate budget category.
Anyway, Good for you guys!
I wonder if I had just dressed in leather from head to toe if it would’ve counted, lol…not sure the sweat equity would’ve been worth it.
Your extra bit of effort is applaudable! Taped on spots would’ve worked for me
.
How fun! My kids love Chick-fil-a! Alas, they’re at THAT age…I doubt I could entice them to dress up like cows, but my niece and nephew would totally do this. Love it!
My husband and daughter did Cow Appreciation, too. Let me rephrase that…my dh brought my dressed up daughter to CFA. No way you’re getting my hubby in a cow costume. Not even for free food. *sigh* Too bad.
Oh my goodness… your very cute boy really does look embarrassed! Or perhaps he’s just bored? Either way, his parents willingness to have fun – even if it is for free food – means you’re much cooler than he is able to comprehend. You’ll probably see that same expression one day when he’s a teenager…
Cow Appreciation Day looks fun! Thanks for adding me to your blog roll!
I sadly did not know in time nor was I able to participate, but next year, if such a thing happens… I’ll be there… hopefully.
IN light of the coolness of this post I had to pass along this link to Shaun Groves where he is singing at a CFA opening and getting free CFA for a year!

oh. my. cow.
you ain’t right!
You are like the parents from the Fairly Odd Parents! [not the fairies, the kid's mom and dad] But only in the first season where you would never see their faces. There was also one episode where they were in a cow costume, too. Creepy. You guys are much cooler, though.
sarah – thanks!
b – your son will eventually learn that free food is much cooler than most other things, esp when it’s CFA!
momster – hopefully we’ll start a trend
amy – we were thinking about taking CB’s food, but we didn’t feel like putting him in a plastic bag. something about being dangerous i guess!
robin – i don’t know if leather would’ve worked or not – that’s kind of appreciating dead cows
carol – you’ll have to get your niece and neph out next year. it’s fun!
amanda – sounds like good father-daughter time. is there anything that CFA can’t do?
elizabeth – yes, we’ll likely keep embarrassing him as the years go on!
cneil – no problem!
sam – i’m sure they’ll do it again. we’ll remind you
matt – yeah, i commented on how envious i was of his gig!
tam – of course we’re not!
raq – yes, we’re apparently fairly odd, but as long as we’re cool, too!
