Commit to a dream — right here, right now

This weekend, CM and the boy were with the Cool Grand ‘Rents, so I could catch up on work at work and around the house. Surprisingly, I finished things in a quick, non-procrastinating manner, and I had a good portion of the weekend to relax and do whatev.

Possibilities of how to spend this new-found free time included seeing The Dark Knight or getting people together to play the Wii. However, I ended up being a “loser” and stared the computer, tweaking the screenplay. Looking back, it’s exactly what I wanted to do.

This is my dream (or at least one of them). Not just finishing it, but getting it made into a movie. And making it part or all of my career. The odds are against me, just like my lack of education, training, or experience in screenwriting. But I believe that God is with me.

One thing that helped me get this far was to tell friends about it, so I would feel accountable to them. I’m usually secretive when it comes to personal pursuits, but I felt like this would be some great motivation. And it has been.

I know that many of you have dreams — things that seem improbable or impossible. Pursuits that feel like you never have time for. Adventures you feel like you just can’t go on. I think we all know that with Christ, all things are possible.

So, I’ll ask: What’s your dream? Are you willing to commit to it? If you do, I want to commit to hold you accountable. Like, ask from time-to-time how it’s going. And if it’s not going, why not.

If something simple like this can encourage someone to chase down a dream, then it’s certainly worth typing these 7 paragraphs. What dream can we help you follow?

I would like to write… I have always written throughout my life so far, things like journalling, poetry, short essays, things along that line, but, what I would like to do is write and publish a novel (or several novels), and a non-fiction piece on some of my observations and experiences.

Great, Sean. If you have a blog, I’ll make it a point to stop in and check on how the novel goes.

I, too, am planning to write a book. That gets optioned for a movie. With an amazing soundtrack. And an Oscar winning original song.

And I need to finish the family history – scan in about 200 photos and publish it all on ancestry.com. Not really a far-off dream, but the more time I let it sit, the more dreamlike it becomes.

I would like to run for public office. Starting on the State level and maybe going into nation politics. Like you I have no experience in this matter and no education in that department. But I believe it is something I must do. Almost like destiny…..Have a great week.

My dream is to become a book editor in Christian publishing.

Whew! Putting it out there – even to people I don’t actually know – is a little bit scary!

(And good for you for doing the same!!)

I have a lot of dreams, maybe too many. But I’m trying to focus. First by getting my writing chops up by blogging more frequently.

    Have you every visited 43things?

Also, are you familiar with the story behind Primer?

  8. cool dad says:

    amy – yes!! dream big.

shawn – from your blog, it’s obvious that it’s a passion (go Dr. Paul!) what steps do you have to take to go toward that? city-level first?

    Barb – our pleasure!

pq – what do you need to do to work down that path? offer fledgling writers free editing?

christopher – yeah, focus is key. my foci(?) are too varied as well. blogging is def. a great start. and thanks for the Primer link. very very interesting!!

Thanks for asking (and what a cool thing to write and interact about – I say you get cool points for that!). I think I’m going to go to the Evangelical Christian Publisher’s Association’s Publishing Institute this fall. I’ve also looked into weekend classes at the University of Chicago for a certificate in editing. And I’m reading a TON of blogs by authors, editors and agents in the industry.

For all of you who want to write a book, just fyi, there’s a lot of information out there about craft and style, as well as all the technical aspects of getting a book published!

pq – so great to see your plan with clear goals and steps. very exciting!

I’m behind on my AWSC posts, apparently. What a cool question!

My dream involves the Kingdom of God, photography, writing and traveling. And a huge project that could very well rock our city, our state, maybe even our nation and the world…just by starting with the creative geniuses already in our circle of friends and simple prayers. It’s a dream, and also a vision and a mission…and I’m pretty sure it will break me (in a good way).

I’m learning to dream big and trust His will.
