My one year trial of doing the stay-at-home mum thing has come to an end. I wasn’t a baby person before, but now Cool Baby has me totally smitten. As frustrating and challenging as it can be, I think I might love this gig.
How do I know? Because the following list has been forming in my head for the past few days.
Top 5 Ways to Ensure the Security of My Job as a SAHM
- Try not to tick off my husband. Thankfully, he is very supportive of my job. The least I could do is be nice to him as he spends all day in a closet-sized office to pay our bills.
- Cut a room off of our house. We have a 3bd/2ba and one of those 3 bedrooms is a complete waste of space. A dungeon for storage of anything we don’t know what to do with. If we moved into a 2/2, we could slash our house payment significantly and be forced to get rid of junk. Plus, there’s that thing everyone says about 2/2’s…you can’t sell them. Another plus! We couldn’t upgrade back up to a 3/2 even if we wanted to!
- Eat CB’s leftovers plus beans & rice every day for lunch. This could keep me pretty healthy too.
- Get a tiny eyebrow ring and dye a prominent fuchsia streak into my hair. Definitely the most fun idea. “Sorry, Cool Dad, nobody wants to hire me for office work for some reason.” I can already hear CD suggesting I work at Hot Topic. Would I gain or lose cool points for that career move?
- One word: Homeschool! It may be the peace corps of parenting, but it would get me at least another 20 years of job security.
The result: one supportive, minimalist, skinny, punk homeschooling mum. I like it.

I love the purple streak idea and it would totally punk out my rapidly graying hair. I still don’t think they’d take me at Hot Topic
And after homeschooling for 3 years, the thought of going back to work scares me and that’s a perfectly acceptable reason to homeschool. At least that’s what I keep telling myself!
this just in!
CM is officially the coolest SAHM!!!
Sounds like job security to me! I love being a SAHM, even if I have my insane days, it’s all worth it!
By the way, I’m one of those “cool” parents you speak of – I even have a spoiler on the back of my minivan!
I completely support all of those moves!
In other news: there is a 2/2 for sale across the street from us! My understanding is that communal living also makes it easier for us SAHMs.
Love this! I’ll have to implement a few of these!
Whatever it takes! Or you can be a work at home Mom… seems to work well for many.

valerie–yeah, I think gray would make the perfect base for purple dye! And congrats on 3 years!
tam–well not yet, so far i have only implemented #3. Actually eating rejected cheerios with sliced bananas with a sippy-cupful of milk poured over it as i type.
sarah mae–a spoiler? wow, didn’t even think of that. nice.
amy–that would be fun! we could start a sahm band too! SAHMba?
wani–let me know how it goes!
apron queen–love your aprons! something mysteriously delightful about them. =) and i wonder how much it costs to get long-distance walkies?
Oh too funny! The purple streaks are fun!
I had some in at the beginning of the year.
I’ve been luckily unemployable this whole first year of mommyhood. I’d love to never go back to work which would be great if the baby paid me to care for him. Since the husband is concerned about finances I occasionally apply for jobs. He was a little upset last time when they didn’t offer me the job and I was overjoyed. I have to pretend to be upset about it from now on I guess. Love your WFMW tip! I’ll be checking out your blog from now on. The purple streak is definitely cool, I’m totally jealous.
Okay…this was a great post! I’m a bit behind in my blog reading…but I say go for whatever punk’d out hair your heart desires…I have been thinking of getting my nosering again…i try to go for a funky haircut (unless it’s grown out due to not wanting to spend on the hair)–any cool moms who do hair that can be part of the SAHM commune? The homeschool thing works for me for the time being…oh, and there is always room for an additional cool baby (might help fill or make use of bedroom #3) Anyway, just my two cents…a bit behind…
