Right now, the soft, silky vocals of James Taylor are lilting from our stereo while CM and the boy sleep. It’s another relaxing night with Delilah.
A few months ago, I thought of Delilah as the cheesy radio show that came on for 10 hours a night where people announce their love for long-lost high school sweethearts and pets. Now, I’m not ashamed to admit I have an appreciation for this fine program.
It started when we figured that background noise/music would keep the boy from waking up at night from random bumps, creaks, and squeaks. Well, we only got one station clearly on our radio, and it was the one that plays Delilah at night.
We’re actually suckers for 70s and 80s soft rock. Like who can possibly resist “Never My Love“?? Don’t answer that.
Well, I’ve learned that Delilah is more than sappy songs we love, but she’s helping people. Callers express their love, regret, joy, and sadness. She responds with encouragement and empathy. I’m sure for some callers, she’s the only person they feel they can talk to.
It doesn’t hurt that she’s a professed Christian, and she frequently talks about God’s grace, mercy, and love. Just about as frequently as she plays “Wind Beneath Your Wings” (a lot).
We finally put a decent antenna on our radio, and we can receive almost all of the local stations now. However, we keep coming back to Delilah. And unlike poor Samson, I think it’s good for us.
(“Friends are Friends Forever” coming on now, for real)

oh well…
Encouragement and empathy? How dare she! Oh wait, is she an alien too? It’s OK then. Right? (grin)
CM – i knew it was coming
jimmy – sadly, that is quite alien behavior. at least it makes it all the more special when someone does it.
The sacrifices we make for our kids! At least it’s not “Barney’s Greatest Hits” or something like that.
I think the real concern here is: what’s with the random bumps, creaks and squeaks?
just us stumbling about the place and our creaky doors.
I love “never my love”! nothin wrong with that song…
im all nostalgic feeling now!
Thanks for the cool post, I had no idea she is a Christian. I assumed she was New Age. I’ll never listen to her the same again!
I try to listen to her…just can’t do it. I guess it’s not really her. It’s her callers that send me over the top. The songs are ok – at least I can sing along with all the 80′s tunes!
