God has been gracious in sparing me from grief so many times in my life. And sometimes it’s just a matter of inches or seconds.
Like the many times where I notice the car ahead of me braking just in time to hit my brakes.
Or the many times the boy has walked and stumbled, just missing ramming his head into something hard and unforgiving.
Or the many times we’ll get to the airport gate just as they’re finishing boarding.
Or the specific instance that inspired this post:
There’s a couch in the boy’s room where I lie down to help him relax and fall asleep. There’s a lamp on a shelf about 3 feet above that couch. The lamp’s cord was apparently under my pillow, so when I turned over, I heard a crash about 6 inches next to my head.
The lamp had been pulled off the shelf and landed on the back of the couch against the wall. 6 inches from a bleeding, unconscious Cool Dad. Thank you, LORD.
God doesn’t always save our necks, and bad things happen, but He’s teaching us in those trials. It’s by His mercy that I haven’t been on the wrong end of many close calls, but my times will come. I hope I will consider it pure joy when they do.
I’m certain that if He wasn’t at work, I would’ve been done for long ago.

Great post. I seem to have those close calls a lot. It usually reminds me how often those little things can ruin a day and how often God spares us from them.
Amen Brother, I would have been done a loooooooooooong time ago. About million times as well.
But the cool thing is when you mentioned the fact that it’s not even the fatal things, but all the little things that almost happen. They would kill me, but dang they would hurt.
i think we forget or take advantage of the fact HE is always there (here) Some days…i must really keep Him on His Holy Toes too!
chad – yeah, even something like a speeding ticket can ruin your week or month, but God has spared me the trouble thus far.
randy – thanks. the small stuff matters, too!
tam – i forget it often, unfortunately. if I kept it in mind, my life and behavior would be different (and better!!)
