At work, you keep your feet to yourself

My workplace is pretty laid back. I can take lunch whenever. I blast music in my little office/storage closet. I wear jeans and a decent shirt every day.

However, according to CM, I pushed things too far yesterday. It’s HOT here in Florida. Seems like we’re in the 90s by lunchtime. So, instead of burying my poor feet in socks and shoes, I wore flip-flops with my jeans and decent shirt.

When making lunch plans with CM, I told her I was wearing flip-flops and she flipped and flopped out. Something about being unprofessional and I should be ashamed and my retirement fund being taken away.

What was the big deal? They were decent Reef sandals — no plastic thongs or anything. And women get to wear open-toed shoes all the time. What if I wanted to show off my latest pedicure?

Anyway, I caved and she brought my socks and shoes to lunch. And, of course, as I left for lunch, I ran into two of the most professional people here. I wanted to talk with them later with shoes on to mess with their minds a little bit.

“Wait, I thought I saw toes… I know I saw toes… I SAW TOES!”

Thus ended the Cool Dad Flip-Flop Work Debacle of 2008. And no one even noticed the pedicure.

This is why you need Keens, they are part sandle, part shoe… no one knows what to say about them. Oh, and they wont mark the surface of your boat!

But what I am REALLY wondering is if you tipped the pedicurist? :-P

  2. Justmatt says:

next time go with the “French Pedicure” – That one always gets attention. Trust me.

  3. Emily says:

I would DIE if I couldn’t wear flip flops to work. Or panty hose. Or pretty much anything besides jeans and flip flops. Floridians aren’t complicated, just give us our flops and some sunscreen and we are happy.

  4. seven says:

In my humble opinion, toes should be allowed to roam unfettered in all workplaces, except maybe in factories where you could drop an anvil on your toe or something. I would die if I had to wear socks and shoes every day.

  5. Jimmy says:

It is probably a good think no one noticed the pedicure!

  6. cool dad says:

scott – we don’t have a boat, but Keens sound, well, keen!

matt – with the price of oil skyrocketing to new levels, a trip to Paris or Lyons ain’t as cheap as it used to be.

emily – i’ll have to wear sunscreen to work and see if they make a big stink. “Why’s it smell like cocoa butter around here?” *grinning inside*

seven – both you and emily would perish at the prospect of closed-toe shoes at work. i’m learning something new about females.

jimmy – who knows, the professionals might’ve been impressed! i guess we’ll never know…

  7. randy says:

as long as you don’t have the supper long toe nail or the one that shoots way off to the side, I think you’ll be ok.

  8. Tam says:

    hahahaha! CM rocks!!!

  9. Janice (5 Minutes for Mom) says:

Considering the horrific agony of women’s footwear – high heels that push into a triangle at the front (WHOSE foot is shaped like that please?!?) panty hose etc, we women do deserve the break that summer affords with open toe freedom. I mean in winter you men are all cozy and warm while we stand tipped up on our frozen, cramped toes!

but really – feet deserve freedom. here is to flip flops and jeans for all!

btw- i am new here – love what i see so far. came from Kristen and Link Loved.

    tam–why thank you! ha

janice–welcome! i’m all for the flip-flops, just not this week as he’s waiting for some important news at work.

don’t tell cool dad I told you all this…but we actually have matching flip-flops. it has caused him a great deal of distress that I purchased those reefs for him and then later got myself the same pair in my size! heh heh heh

matching husband-and-wife flip flops? I think we just lost another 5 cool points!

  11. annie says:

    Funny post.

CM – I can relate. I’ve purchased a couple of things that match my husbands, and he never wants to wear them at the same time! I don’t understand it… It’s really not cool? Ha!

  12. portorikan says:

besides coming home and taking off my pants, taking off my shoes and slipping on the flip-flops is probably one of the first things I do.

I understand… Fl. Heat ain’t no joke, and I’m further north than you I believe.

  13. Rachel says:

I am not allowed to wear flip flops to work (nor jeans) and it’s driven me crazy for the most part. I got used to it though.

I am not a heels person, at least not a daily-wearing basis. They usually hurt my back and my feet, and add to clumsiness quotient. So I found a few pairs of cute flats and often sport a comfy, cute skirt when it’s not too cold. Next best thing to jeans. :)

I have to admit though…I think flip flops push the limits of the “business casual” style it sounds like CD’s office has. Most guys have nasty looking feet and toes, anyhow. It really depends on the company culture, I’d say.

  14. cool dad says:

randy – yeah, i at least try to keep the toenails from reaching hillbilly status. (apologies to any hillbilly readers we have, but it’s true, isn’t it?)

    tam – she does!

janice – good point! i’m very thankful to not have to wear some of those torture devices i see on women’s feet.

CM – it’s bad enough when we wear the same flip-flops out. now you had to tell our blog friends about it!!

annie – i don’t know a lot about what’s cool in fashion, but i’m pretty sure that matching his-and-hers outfits are not. :)

sam – yes, liberating the feet is a wonderful moment in the day

rachel – isn’t it a good thing to push the limits of fashion? :)
