2 things

Is it ALREADY June 27?? This year is flying by.

THING 1

We’ll be out of town all next week, but hopefully we’ll have internet access to keep things going here. Unfortunately, I think that Monday’s chat is in jeopardy of being canceled.

Did you hear that?

That was the Internet groaning. Or breathing a sigh of relief; I can never tell. Anyway, please don’t hate us if we don’t chat on Monday night. It’s no fun being hated.

THING 2

Considering that our last two posts were about jobs, I figured it would be a good idea and mix things up and talk about… careers!

I’ve been seriously considering working for a church. I think that my technical background combined with dabs of creativity, interesting ideas, and humor would serve well somewhere. And I guess I should mention my earnest desire to honor Jesus with my life.

I’ve worked with many churches for side projects. This includes collaborating with youth, college, worship, and senior pastors. I feel like I have a good understanding of how things work, while also knowing that every church is different.

How many of you work for a church? Do you have any advice for someone coming from “secular” (i don’t like using that word, but i guess it fits here) employment?

Please leave your thoughts and advice!

Hey, Cool Dad – I think it’s great that you’re considering vocational ministry! How cool (no pun intended) if God can use your change in employment now to put you in a position like that!

As for any advice….I don’t work for a church, but I work for a Christian company. (We are a for-profit corporation, but management and most employees are Christians.) I actually realized yesterday that even though that’s awesome, one drawback for me is that it gives me fewer opportunities for at-work ministry/witnessing. That would be different if my actual work was ministry, I guess. Just one thing that I’ve thought about…

I work for a church, but it’s very random how I ended up there. We get volunteers to do all our tech stuff. In my experience, only larger churches have a full time video/tech/graphics person.

Not sure that I’m much help in the “working at a church” department, but I’m more than a little curious about Thing #1 – going on vacation… not that visiting the metropolis we live is “vacation material” but if you’re in the area we’d love to see you!

    um.

    yah.

internet and tam are definitely groaning about monday. this will just not do.

I went from journalism to pastoring. I see it as the same line of work. Telling the truth to people.

Word of warning: don’t assume church work will be nice and heavenly. You still deal with people. And people can be messy. Even those ON the payroll.

  6. cool dad says:

photoqueen – good point! There are have been times when it seemed like we were surrounded by only Christians and they often seemed to be spiritually-stale times as well.

emily – maybe it will take some randomness (aka acts of God) to get me there if I’m supposed to be there.

elizabeth – sorry, no metropolis visiting this time around!

tam – many apologies to you and the Web! maybe i can sneak some chatting in here. we’ll see.

travis – yes, even as congregants, we’ve seen the messy side of church. we’re all humans after all.
