I’m sorry to ruin the world’s Monday evening, but there will be no official Cool Chat tonight at 9:00 PM EST.
Been traveling since 4:30 AM and finally have some wireless internet and time to sit still. Ah… Here’s a running joke with my friends: we walk into somewhere with wi-fi and like Neo from The Matrix, I exclaim that I “can feel the Internet.” [-5 cool points]
Now that I think about it, if you happen to be online tonight, follow my Twitter, and wanna chat — I bet I can wrangle up some chatting time on here.
It was getting perilous toward the end, but I’m impressed that I made it a good 15 hours without the ol’ WWW. Well, I jumped on my friend’s iPhone (not literally – his brain would fall out from the shock) and checked a little email, but that doesn’t count.
I think I know the answer, but am I the only geek around here who misses the Internet more the longer I’m away from it? Or are you able to break free from its webby grasp?
All the concerts, drives with the music cranked, and study sessions with the Discman blaring have left my ears at less than 100%. And there have been plenty of times where it wasn’t even my fault.
- One July 4 on Lake Michigan, some guys (jerks) were shooting fireworks on the beach while we were hanging out at the end of a dock. One of their bottle rockets veered right by my head.
- Driving around with the windows open and a nasty-loud car/truck zooms by.
- I was just on the phone and the volume was apparently CRANKED, so when my friend said “Hello?”, I think I heard my eardrum cry.
- The boy’s high-pitched cries and squeals that have me covering my ears and running.
So, I learned a while ago to not take your hearing for granted. Hearing loss never heals. I have a mild form of tinnitus, a constant ringing in my ears. I can only hear the ringing when it’s quiet, like laying in bed at night.
I have earplugs for concerts and loud situations like mowing the yardwork or trying to soothe a particularly upset Cool Baby (is that an oxymoron?). If you’re frequently in hearing-perilous moments, I highly suggest getting some earplugs for yourself, too. I think we all want to hear our grandkids’ high-pitched cries and squeals, too.

This morning consisted of yardwork at 6:30 AM, packing, and some driving. Now, CM is partying, CB is napping, and I’m racking my brain to compose a meaningful and funny blog post. Sorry — after this week, the brain’s empty.
So, I said that I would ask this from time to time: What are you stoked about? As in, what are you are really looking forward to?
I’m stoked about the possibility of new beginnings in possibly even far-from-here places! Such a tease of a statement, I know. I guess my future is teasing me. I look forward to hearing what’s tantalizing you all!
Is it ALREADY June 27?? This year is flying by.
THING 1
We’ll be out of town all next week, but hopefully we’ll have internet access to keep things going here. Unfortunately, I think that Monday’s chat is in jeopardy of being canceled.
Did you hear that?
That was the Internet groaning. Or breathing a sigh of relief; I can never tell. Anyway, please don’t hate us if we don’t chat on Monday night. It’s no fun being hated.
THING 2
Considering that our last two posts were about jobs, I figured it would be a good idea and mix things up and talk about… careers!
I’ve been seriously considering working for a church. I think that my technical background combined with dabs of creativity, interesting ideas, and humor would serve well somewhere. And I guess I should mention my earnest desire to honor Jesus with my life.
I’ve worked with many churches for side projects. This includes collaborating with youth, college, worship, and senior pastors. I feel like I have a good understanding of how things work, while also knowing that every church is different.
How many of you work for a church? Do you have any advice for someone coming from “secular” (i don’t like using that word, but i guess it fits here) employment?
My one year trial of doing the stay-at-home mum thing has come to an end. I wasn’t a baby person before, but now Cool Baby has me totally smitten. As frustrating and challenging as it can be, I think I might love this gig.
How do I know? Because the following list has been forming in my head for the past few days.
Top 5 Ways to Ensure the Security of My Job as a SAHM
- Try not to tick off my husband. Thankfully, he is very supportive of my job. The least I could do is be nice to him as he spends all day in a closet-sized office to pay our bills.
- Cut a room off of our house. We have a 3bd/2ba and one of those 3 bedrooms is a complete waste of space. A dungeon for storage of anything we don’t know what to do with. If we moved into a 2/2, we could slash our house payment significantly and be forced to get rid of junk. Plus, there’s that thing everyone says about 2/2’s…you can’t sell them. Another plus! We couldn’t upgrade back up to a 3/2 even if we wanted to!
- Eat CB’s leftovers plus beans & rice every day for lunch. This could keep me pretty healthy too.
- Get a tiny eyebrow ring and dye a prominent fuchsia streak into my hair. Definitely the most fun idea. “Sorry, Cool Dad, nobody wants to hire me for office work for some reason.” I can already hear CD suggesting I work at Hot Topic. Would I gain or lose cool points for that career move?
- One word: Homeschool! It may be the peace corps of parenting, but it would get me at least another 20 years of job security.
The result: one supportive, minimalist, skinny, punk homeschooling mum. I like it.
