We’ve still got time

We finally saw Once yesterday. Major props to CM for predicting that we could watch the whole movie while the boy slept on her lap after a feed.

We love music. We like indie films. CM has some bond with Ireland. It was a great movie for us.

I was glad, yet a little disappointed, when I saw so many Once’s on the shelf Friday evening. Glad because we could get it obviously. But disappointed thinking, “This movie just won an Oscar. Shouldn’t more people be interested in it?” Then I got all prideful thinking that we were so cultured while everyone else fought over the last copy of I Know Who Killed Me. My pride is dumb.

I should watch more movies. I’m sure some of our friends have learned to not ask us, “Have you seen (insert recent movie here)?” The answer will most certainly be no.

There’s a lot of junk out there. Several fruitless trips to the movie store in a row got us off movies. But I love good stories and I love film as the highest artform — the combination of writing, music, and visuals. I don’t want to give up.

Also, I aspire to write movies, so I better watch me some good ones. I’ll let you know how that goes.

I’ve heard good things about this one as well but it was out this weekend (they didn’t have many copies though, sadly).

Hooray for you! Glad you liked it…Hold on you never actually say that you did… You say it was a great movie for you…is that because it was a ‘great movie’ or because cool baby slept all the way through it? Stop being so confusing man! : )

OH, JustMatt will be so happy.

We haven’t seen Once yet, but definitely plan to. It’s been in the Czech newspapers recently – any time a Czech makes it onto the world scene they tend to be rather proud!

There’s another short Czech film that we were introduced to recently that I think you would enjoy. The title is Most (which means The Bridge in Czech). If you don’t mind English subtitles, perhaps you’ll want to “Czech” it out. :)

sam – being a musician, i think you’ll really like it

matt – we loved it! i listened to ‘Falling Slowly’ about 5 times at work

    amy – then we’re happy :)

So I guess we’ll have to rent it too.

I’m with you all on giving up on movies. It’s hard to find a good one. But if you say this is good then how can I not be convinced with a name like “Cool Dad”!

elizabeth – thanks! we don’t mind subtitles at all. maybe the library will have it, because i doubt that the movie store will. we’ll try though.

    tam – i think you’ll be happy.

    * and just a note to those who haven’t seen it. there are a quite a few F-bombs dropped. just wanted to let you know because some people want to know in advance.

wow – it is nice to know I have such control over your happiness. It must be my jedi like abilities.

  9. cool dad says:

What are some other movies you have watched recently that you’d recommend?

We’re in the same boat as we have two little boys, not enough time or money to pick up trash movies anymore…

We did just see Amazing Grace which was pretty stellar…

Other commenters would offer much better recommendations than I. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen many other movies recently.

U23D was great, but that’s in the theaters. Ratatouille was a very pleasant surprise. Little Miss Sunshine was fun, too.

Thanks JustMatt for the recommendation of Once! Cool Dad surprised me by bringing this home. I have a feeling that had you not recommended it, he may have looked at the cover and rejected it in fear of the Chick Flick Guy. Great film.
