Free food is the most delicious

My friend was presenting at a function around lunchtime. I went to support my friend, but the news of free food there didn’t hurt. Unfortunately, the food was under wraps until later and I had to return to work.

Back at the office, I was wondering where I would eat. CM and I are in ultra-lockdown mode on eating out, so I didn’t want to go anywhere. But there was no food in the building that belonged to me.

Then I saw them.

If one of the groups on our floor has leftovers from a lunch meeting, they leave them on the table of our break room. Every time I walk by, I peek in, hoping to see an inviting box filled with wonderful food.

Strangely, it’s the same expectant feeling I get when I log into Blogspot, hoping to see the words “1 comment needs to be moderated.” Yes, I’m that pathetic. [-5 cool points].

Anyway, there they were. Boxes filled with meatloaf, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and gravy. Praise God in Heaven above! Not only was it free food — it was my kind of free food.

There are types of people who wouldn’t touch the stuff. Not because they’re on a diet or that it’s an hour old, but just because they were leftovers from someone else’s gathering.

How picky are you? Do you turn away in disgust when offered a sample at Publix or equivalent grocery store? Or will you eat a half-eaten éclair that was gently placed in a trash can?

What are your limits on eating free food?

Free food is a staple of my diet. I usually plan my weekends around it. Will there be food? Will it be free?

Free Food is great…love the samples…Everyone thinks I’m crazy b/c I take all 3 of my kiddos to Costco and we have a great time samplin’ all the goodies (me, my kids, and 1/2 of Century village…God bless em’)
However, I am not a “Freegan”…apparently there is an actual term for this behavior/person. It’s quite interesting. BTW, I too can’t wait to see my comments on my blog…I’m afraid I only have a couple of regulars…does it take long to get people to read your blog…or does this lack of “known readership” really telling me I’m not such a “hip mama”? And why does it matter? Ha!OH Well.

    I usually partake in sampling.
My father often makes Sam’s Club samples his lunch.

CM – i was thinking of you the whole time.

ryan – great idea! excellent way to save money.

kristin – and healthier for you, too! relieves stress knowing you didn’t have to pay for it :)

hipmama – we heard about the ‘freegan’ thing after Oprah talked about it, i think. we’re discussing trying it, just for the experience. and we’re still trying to figure out this whole readership thing. ours goes up and down at the oddest times. like after a post that we think is great, it drops. after a day or two of no posts, it goes up. we think you’re pretty hip ’cause you know that it really doesn’t matter in the end. just have fun!

reese – smart man. does he use a disguise (sunglasses, wig, fake moustache, etc.) to get seconds? not that i’ve ever done that or anything… (ahem)

Free food is almost always better than “not free” food… especially if it’s free food in the form of gift cards to a favorite restaurant! SHB has the best free food story about his mom stopping to eat someone else’s salad on her way out of the Wau.Drive-In. I’ll let him tell it if he wants…
