Amy’s bravely-posted list of concerts inspired me over here. Go over there and try to compete with her “top 5 reasons”!
Here’s my concert list in chronological order (that I can remember):
1. Debbie Gibson (hey, at least I can say truthfully that I never liked NKOTB, ok?)
2. Boyz II Men (waited 6 hours in rain)
3. 2 Night of Joy visits around middle school (technically, there were Christian concerts there…I was probably hanging with Mr. Toad instead though)
4. Weezer
5. Counting Crows
6. Various Christian concerts
7. Keane
8. Coldplay
9/10. 2 U2 concerts
Maybe my musical tastes are improving with age. Or maybe I’ve hit my concert coolness peak and it’s all downhill from here (most likely).
I can tell you one thing, though. Starting with #6 there were earplugs involved. Smart? Yes. Cool? Hmm…Not so sure the Frankenstein look works for me.
Another sign of things to come…as I type this I’m listening to the Delilah radio show. Oh well.
Cool Dad: Jumping in on this post! I was a more prolific concert-goer than CM in my youth. It’s interesting to see how my tastes have changed. Bigger name shows include:
Eric Clapton
Metallica
Lollapalooza (highlights: Soundgarden, RATM, one of my friends getting in a fight, dodging hundreds of flying cardboard pizza plates)
Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Sister Hazel
Dave Matthews Band x 2
Smashing Pumpkins x 3
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Run D.M.C.
Third Day
Jars of Clay
Tree63
various Christian festivals
Keane
Coldplay
U2 x 2
Mae

i got to be in the bomb shelter at the Chicago U2 Vertigo tour. Very cool. But my 1992 Metallica and Guns-n-Roses concert was VERY cool.
Love your blog.

Aw, I wanted to go to the Metallica/GN’R show so badly! My brother went and got me a t-shirt. I wore it proudly to school.
Delilah radio show? Seriously? I cannot stand her, sorry. haha She’s real sweet and all…but noooo thank you. I’d rather watch Paula and Simon duke it out on Idol (okay, maybe that’s exaggerating a bit).
I have encountered some pretty rad shows in the recent past, since I guess I’m still in “my youth” and prime concert-going years. Standouts include:
-Mute Math (x3? Maybe 4?)
-David Crowder Band (x…um, a lot)
-Emery (a pleasant surprise)
-Countless indie shows, to name a few: Edison Glass, Chris McLeod, Red Wood Rising and Symon
I am jealous that you’ve seen Mae twice, CD. And I really, really want to see U2 and also Coldplay (if ever that happens) sometime.
Fun lists, guys.
Now, hang on here – I didn’t include a comprehensive list of concerts I’ve seen – just the more irrelevant ones! I saw Debbie Gibson in my felt-hat wearing days, too, CM! And I have also seen Sister Hazel a couple times. Saw Garth Brooks in the front row. And I’ve seen Third Day, about 14 times (once in Times Square!). Name the Christian band, and I’ve had some type of experience with them – like the Newsboys, in their silver jumpsuit Shine phase. So, not ALL of my concert experiences have been bizarre…
I did leave KC & The Sunshine Band off the honorable mention list though.
I’m so honored to have inspired a blog.
Nice list! Weezer, RATM, Counting Crows…nice! I’ve jumped in the fund too! Come on over and have a look!
rachel – i’d really like to see DCB. And oh, i’ve only seen Mae once. What do you think of their latest album? I’ve heard a few songs and I’m on the fence.
amy – thank you for the inspiration! your comment is very list-like! all it needs is the carriage returns. see, you can do it!
matt – your post is to the extreme!
CD-I did not like their new stuff at all intially…but just this last week or two, in fact, I went back to it and I can’t seem to get enough. I thought it sounded like they sold out at first, but now I can hear their style coming through. It’s odd.
“Sometimes I Can’t Make it Alone” has been on repeat in my head. I don’t actually own the album, I just peruse various musicians’ myspace pages during the day while I work.
I’ll have to give a few listens then. thanks!
OK Rachel, I should have clarified…I promise I’m not a fan of Delilah herself, just a fan of the type of music she plays (which may be just as uncool)–80s and 90s sappy ballads. Cool Dad definitely has the cooler taste in music!
Maybe I’m not as irrelevant as I think…(as Amy informs me). BTW I enjoy your “cool points” references throughout your blog…Thanks
