Kids these days and their music

The Music Monday post brought back junior high memories of listening to the radio in my room. Kids these days would think I was dumb for thinking so, but I think they’re missing out on the whole ‘sitting in your room, waiting for a favorite song to play on the radio’ thing.

Now, if they wanna hear a song, they play it. If they get bored after the second chorus, they play the next one. In my day, you listened to what they played for you and you liked it! And if you didn’t like it, you were too lazy to turn the dial back and forth, so you still listened to it!

Writing that post, I just kept going back to those junior high songs — to the ones that I grew up with dreaming of what it would be like to have a girlfriend. Geeky pathetic, I know, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. And I’ve got the Cool Wife and Baby to show for it.

I remember how I would rush home from school, go straight to my room, turn on the radio, put a CASSETTE TAPE in, push down *play* *record* *pause* all together, and wait for my favorite song to come on so I could record it. And occasionally I would call in and request a song! Those were the days! Good Times!

My all time Favorite song was/is Every Breath You Take by The Police. It was number #1 for the year in 1983, according to Casey Casem ;-) I was a freshman in H.S.

CD – you have got me all nostalgic now!

tam – I was just going to leave the SAME EXACT COMMENT! Except for the 1983 thing.

Also, I remember when one station would do the Top Five at Five, and I knew when one or two of my favorite songs would be on the list, so I would tune in whenever possible to hear it. It was usually something by GNR…had to listen to it on the radio b/c i wasn’t allowed to own the tape.

It worked for MTV too – I had a standing date at 5:55 for the New Kids’ Hangin’ Tough video.

tam – YES! Record and pause. the key to only missing the first second of a song without that weird DWUB sound from just hitting record.

amy – how i loved GNR. they don’t make rock bands like they used to. can’t say i had the same love for NKOTB though :)
