Happy Valentine’s Day

Cool Mum is very cool in that she doesn’t buy into what card and candy companies say Valentine’s Day should be. She’s simple. Feb. 14 has always been about time together, not huge bouquets or big heart-shaped boxes of candy. She’d much prefer a pack of M&M’s or a box of generic Oreos over a sampler of chocolates filled with various weird nougats.

Because we’d rather not leave the boy with a sitter yet, it looks like Valentine’s Day will be dinner at home. Maybe we’ll dress up the boy. He might like wearing something other than a diaper with Cheerios stuck to it to dinner.

Actually, there’s a chance that we may get a mystery shop for Perkins tonight! There’s not much that’s more romantic than seeing that case full of pies when you walk through the door.

I know it’s a stretch, but does anyone have even bigger plans for Valentine’s Day?

wow – once again the “cools” as I like to call you..may I call you the “cools” – anyways – once again you all have made it near impossible to compete. Who can top Perkins! Last time me and the misses were there it was Thanksgiving night and we shared a fried appetizer sampler and each had a dessert….good times…bad combo.

As for this year – we lucked out. One half of our good friends ditched his wife and went skiing on Vday – so his lonely wife offered to watch our kids so that “At least someone could enjoy vday”
So the wife and I are planning an adventure of sorts called “which of the restaurants that we have gift cards for can we get in to first?” This should be fun as each one of them is extremely popular on non- “you must go out to dinner” nights…which means tonight should be a real challenge. So cross your fingers for us. We’ll let you know how it ends up.

Thanks for the kind words, CD! You are really lucky to be married to me. You left out the best part–I don’t like jewelry (except for that wonderful ring you got me 6 years ago)!

Good luck tonight, Matt and Amy! Maybe if you show up early you can chill with the old folks for an early bird special. =)

CM, I’m with you on the jewelry thing too. Every time i see a Zales commercial and the pitiful girl is opening a box of 2 carat diamond earrings, I turn to my man and say, “If you ever waste our money on something like that for me – I will drop kick you!” That sounds more like a threat actually…poor guy!

    Happy V-Day you two!

Matt, you scored! But I feel horrible for the wife who offered…that’s terrible! Not terrible watching your kids – but that SHE CAN on V-Day…yikes!

Seriously? Mystery shopping at Perkins??? Should I believe this? I’m never quite sure… :)

As for the “non-parents” we’re planning on spending the night at home… together. It’s the one and only night of the year that I make shrimp scampi alfredo. However, my favorite part will be the chocolate fondue while watching Survivor! The exciting life of the childless!!!

  5. RyAn says:

We are the same way. Simple is better :)

I don’t know if it has always been that way, but life usually tends to make it that way…oh well!

matt – your friend’s wife may see it as being ditched for V-Day, but I see it as him sacrificing his V-Day so that you guys could celebrate. What a guy!

CM – i know i’m lucky to be with you! every day, i wonder why you’re with a computer-lovin’ arrogant dork like me. and then i remember it’s my stunning good looks and physique. …but i still married up.

tam – it’s great to know that there are others out there who don’t demand the diamond heart pendant for V-Day and the Lexus SUV with a big red bow for Christmas!

elizabeth – does shrimp scampi alfredo hold some sentimental significance for you guys on V-Day?

ryan – simple is especially convenient now that there’s a little one around!

  7. Elizabeth says:

The only reason shrimp scampi alfredo holds any sentimental value is because Valentine’s Day is the only time I make it… and I’m not really sure why. Perhaps because it’s slightly expensive – however, it’s definitely easy to make. It is the meal that SHB ate on our first date and it’s one he really enjoys so perhaps that’s why I started making it. As for this year… we actually just ate fondue for dinner. I made the scampi the next night. Not sure if we could get away with just eating chocolate and fruit for dinner if we had kids, but for now we’ll enjoy it!

family traditions are fun. we need to start some.

i think chocolate fondue and fruit are totally acceptable with kids around. especially when that’s all you have around the house!
