Me and U2

January 26, 2008 |  by cool mum  |  culture, the Life

1994: High school friends introduced me to the 80’s stuff and we went to a U2 laser light show (hehe).

2001: Heard “Beautiful Day” on the radio after a few years of Christian-music-only diet. Got the CD immediately. Quietly became a fanatic.

2002: Got married (unfortunately I did not walk/run down the aisle to “Streets”…what a missed opportunity) and started analyzing lyrics, listening to interviews, and convincing my husband of Bono’s awesomeness (”he’s telling people to read the Bible!”). By pure coincidence, forced to go on a week long trip to Dublin as part of graduate program requirements. Took a picture in front of Bono’s house and purchased a Bono-mullet-photo key chain.

2003: In a spiritually dead season, felt like God was trying to get my attention through “With or Without You” (all-time favorite song). Weird, I know.

2004: I read this. Hosted an Atomic Bomb listening party.

2005: I read this. U2 show in Miami. Saw Bono drive by and screamed instinctively. U2 show in Tampa. Conquered my fears of getting smooshed with general admission tickets. Camped all day. Landed in absolute front row (photo above), against the barricade, spitting distance of the beloved Edge. Shock. Awe.

2006-2007: Cool Dad vetoed “Hewson” as a possible middle name for our son.

2008: Saw U2 3D. I guess I’ve tamed down a bit. Thinking how funny it is that God can use silly rock bands to get your attention.

Sidenote: the whole “U2 and Christianity” thing is an old, tired subject for some. But, how can you not love this?

  1. Absolute Front Row at U2 is worth at least 21 cool points.

My U2 story: didn’t have tickets to miami show. Got tickets to miami show day-of. Didn’t feel well, had to gave tickets back.

    Tremendous regrets.

  2. My man posted a Bono quote on his blog last note. Love Bono!

Watched the “Still haven’t found” video you linked… I think I just had me some CHURCH!!!

  3. This makes me happy. Especially the part about CD vetoing Hewson. haha

Um…+15 cool points for knowing why you like a band as epic as U2 and for camping out for front row seats. ;)

  4. amy – i feel for you. they’re working on the new album, so you know they at least have one more tour in them.

tam – yeah, that was sweet.

rachel – again, i’ll say sorry to CM. .. Cool “Hewson” Baby just wasn’t doing it for me.

  5. How was U23D? I want to see it.. Where is the ‘Cool Review’?

  6. Cool Mum, that’s your cue…

  7. Here’s my review:

“If only they had made a U2 version of Captain EO…”

I’ve been really spoiled by the awesome 3D movies at the Disney parks, so I wasn’t sure how this would compare.

    Pros:
    1)Music rocked! (of course)
2)Got to see some great detailed shots. Felt like you were there.
3)Completely not cheesy, except for the yellow glasses we had to wear.
4)Amazing when Bono looked right at me!

    Cons:
1)I sort of missed the Disney-ish 3D gags that make you dodge objects, etc. (Bono didn’t even do his signature kicking of the camera!)
2)There could have been more up-close-and-personal shots with Bono =).
3)They left out City of Blinding Lights!

All in all, the most fun movie I’ve ever seen in a theater! Go see it, and make sure it’s an IMAX theater!

  8. Thanks cool mum! Here that Amy – Happy Birthday to Me!

  9. I had my wife listening a little bit to U2. She is a HARD-CORE christian music only listener. It was quite a feat on my part.

I was telling her to listen to the words, and how alot of thier songs had christian overtones, etc. Then, Bono drops the F-bomb. She was out immediately.

I still listen, but only if the wifey is not around.

BTW – front row for U2 should be worth at least 60 or 70 cool points!

  10. I can’t wait to check this out… unfortunately, I’ll have to drive somewhere (the U2 in 3D concert).

Hopefully, I can catch them on tour though at some point.

  11. matt – happy birthday! it must be sometime around now.

deemus – thanks! i think that Cool Points rules state that the maximum we can accept is 20, but we’ll take it.

portorikan – it’s def. worth a trip to see it in the theater, esp. an IMAX. not sure how long it’s going to be out, so do it sooner than later!
