Being a manly baby

I don’t want to be one of those dads who forces his son into sports, hunting, monster trucks, or other manly activity (though he loves his Bigfoot onesie!) However, I confess that I felt a l’il concern when the boy took affection to a certain toy, and this has nothing to do with dead bugs. It would be this little Japanese feline:

He was introduced to Hello Kitty over Thanksgiving at the in-laws. It was love at first sight (and bite). The toy belonged to Cool Mum when she was a baby, so I appreciate that it’s a legacy.

As you probably know, my imagination tends to run away with itself. I’m afraid that he may defy gender roles and end up like this:

This is the usual crazy talk, but in seriousness, I want the boy to become a man — but not necessarily a man’s man by American standards. I’d like him to enjoy sports, but I wouldn’t be devastated if he didn’t. I’m much more concerned that he become God’s man, and that’s a much bigger and more powerful thing than any monster truck.

Thanks for your comment on my blog about the Flip. We bought it-since what we need it for is You Tube videos. I like your blog am I am confident your son will be fine.

I played with dolls and now I climb very high mountains and camp with Grizzlies.

I have linked to your blog and would love for you to link to me if you wish.

randy #1 – thanks for the assurance! I never got into MLP, but I think I watched some Care Bears. No hard evidence of that exists though.

randy #2 – yeah, the Flip is great for YouTube. thanks for the assurance as well. I don’t know if we want the boy camping with grizzlies anytime soon, but it’s good to know that he’ll be manly enough to if he wants!

my husband had a cabbage patch doll that he was very attached to. i think it’s sweet. very few toys for boys allow an outlet for nurturing or loving.

ps. don’t tell him i told you about the cabbage patch doll….

    :)
