I was reading through Lauren’s blog again yesterday afternoon and I got inspired. In one of those “life is short” moments, I started scheming that as soon as Cool Dad got home, we were going to get all dressed up and go somewhere that didn’t merit such attire. Just to buck the system and have some fun.
Thinking I had explained this whole plan to him, when in fact I had only told him I was going to put on a dress, he certainly felt “discombobulated” (his word) by it all. On entering the house, the poor guy was rushed to the closet and told to put on those newly dry-cleaned pants and a nice shirt. I was already wearing a full-length formal gown. Then, I told him that we were going out to eat at the Target cafĂ©. That idea was vetoed. We went to the mall instead.
The mood was awkward at first, because Cool Dad was wondering if this was my passive aggressive way of complaining that “you never take me out anywhere nice.” Not the case at all.
I went on to explain about my moment of inspiration. About how I had at least five (dusty) formal dresses hanging in the closet from weddings I was in or sales I couldn’t pass up. Some I had never worn. And by some miracle, I could still fit into these things!
Cool Dad breathed a sigh of relief and we split a delicious smoothie and pretzel before making our passeggiata through the mall. At one point, we looked around and everyone within 10 feet of us had gray hair. Fun times. All of this excitement and we still made it home by Baby’s 7:30 bedtime.
We plan to do it again. I have four more dresses to wear!

That is so fun and creative CM! Good times!
My best friend single handedly keeps Target in business. She LOVES that place. So one year on her birthday I decided to surprise her. A limo picked her up at the house – got a few friends on the way. One had to stop at Target for some “necessities on the way to the “party” and of course they all decided to go in with her..to find me and more friends at the Target Snack Shop decked out in birthday fun… Target decorated cupcakes the nine yards. I haven’t been able to top that since…
thanks for the link, man. also, very cool idea. way to seize the day. with baby, especially. i think i will try a similar idea, except go out naked. . . just kidding.
i am trying to email you, cuz you said you had a question about something, but i lack the mental resources to figure out how to do that properly. here’s my email:

Can I say how hilarious your posts are? I just read about half a dozen and laughed quite a bit. I like you guys. We should see each other if you are ever down here. By the way, in response to your comment…nate says the pastor didn’t really say why they would burn burn burn, but I think he said it because they were leading people astray with their song “satisfaction,” which, by the way, is in my head after playing Raving Rabids 2 on the wii…what does that say about me?
tam – I think you just opened the door for me to take CM to the Target Snack Shop for Valentine’s Day. Thanks!!!
lauren – if we see “Woman visits mall naked with child” on CNN, we’ll know you changed your mind!
wendy – I’ve played the first Raving Rabbids game and something about those rabbids just gets stuck in your head. maybe we should decorate the boy’s room in them. no, that might warp him.
I am so inspired! I am a big fan of allowing my girls to express their creativity by selecting their own outfits for almost every occasion. This of course means that they leave the house in costume at least once a week, but I’ve never thought about doing it MYSELF!
Side note: our little community IS planning to host a Prom soon to give everyone a chance to wear those dresses again. We’re going all out – complete with chaperones and a balloon arch!
