One rite of initiation for new dads is figuring out all the baby paraphernalia and keeping their oft-ridiculous names straight. I’m still learning, but I’ve picked up on a few. Let’s start with the Boppy.
The Boppy is a curved pillow. That’s all. It’s near the top of my This Probably Costs $(Small Number) to Make and They’re Selling It for How Much? list. I really wish I had invented it.
It’s a great idea and kudos/scorn to whomever came up with it first. You’ll probably use it every day for the first few months. The Boppy is handy for
- feeding – put it around your or mum’s waist
- propping – for a lying baby
- sitting – helping baby sit up
Out-of-the-box thinkers can also employ it to
1) Make baby feel special by letting him use the world’s biggest neck pillow.

2) Make yourself feel special with your new plush luxury toilet seat cover. PLEASE wash after every use for baby’s sake and the sake of humanity in general.

The Boppy is not to be confused with
- Bop-It – the Simon Says-like toy/game that gives you instructions to a sweet sweet drumbeat. You can get your child a Bop-It when they’re older and will regret it soon after.
- Bobbit – the name that strikes fear into the hearts of men everywhere.

First, guess you are not aware that the Boppy pillow has been banned and recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The reason is that the cover has a zipper that has lead in it and the tag can come lose and choke a babyu if swalloed !!!
As a man you of course havn’tever breastfed. The Boppy is a baby support pillow and completely useless for breastfeeding.
One size does NOT fit all.
There is another issue as well.
If/when mothers milk and other bodily fluids get into the Boppy is becomes a factory for all kinds of germs.
Better throw it away.
Lisa.
Lisa,
Thank you for letting us know about the recall. We hadn’t heard about it. Apparently, the recall is for specific slipcovers. Here is the recall page on the Boppy website. Thankfully, we don’t have those slipcovers, but we’re very mindful of those issues now.
I’ll leave comments about feeding to Cool Mum, but I remember that she did use it frequently at first.
Thanks again – we’ll be sure to spread the word as well.
Thanks Lisa, I’m glad you mentioned the recall. I recently heard about it, but I didn’t mention it to Cool Dad because we don’t have any of the recalled slipcovers. Isn’t it crazy how many things are being recalled these days?
As for the usefulness, I pretty much used it every day at the beginning. It really helped keep the baby in a lying-down position without wearing out my arms. I can totally see how it wouldn’t work for everyone though. I think there is another brand on the market that is more adjustable, right?
These days we use it a lot as the baby’s learning to sit up. It keeps him from “bopping” his head when he loses his balance.
Oh, and just a disclaimer that Cool Dad does not actually use the Boppy as a toilet seat cover! =)
