Matthew 21:15-16 (New International Version)
But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise’?”
In case you haven’t read it, Jesus is quoting Psalm 8:2. Here’s that psalm in some of the more entertaining translations:
King James Version
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
Babes and Sucklings…What a catchy name for a baby praise and worship CD.
New Living Translation
You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.
I like this one. Early language development stimulated by the urge to praise God?
The Message
Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you; toddlers shout the songs that drown out enemy talk, and silence atheist babble.
Fun but a little scary…
I don’t fully understand these verses, but I think the bottom line is summed up in the preceding verse:
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
